ack Kirby and Joe Simon's Captain America first appeared in 1941, where he's depicted on the cover of Captain America Comics #1 delivering a crushing right hook to the jaw of Adolf Hitler. The character was the most popular in Timely Comics' titles throughout the 1940s. After World War II ended, Captain America was relegated to battling crime back in the United States, and in the 1950s the character drifted into obscurity until Avengers #4 in 1964. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby reintroduced Cap to the Baby Boomer generation on this outstanding Kirby cover depicting Captain America leading the Avengers into battle. This is the most important issue to feature the character since Captain America Comics #1 and probably the most significant event in Avengers continuity. In addition to becoming leader of the Avengers, Captain America was featured in Tales of Suspense and the self-titled Captain America starting in 1968.
